It seems that the only thing you can count on when it comes to weather in South Dakota is that it will change, often.

Warm spells in the winter and cold spells in the early summer are common. Having no snow on the ground on Christmas Day is not that out of the ordinary. Frankly, if it snowed on the 4th of July, I wouldn't be surprised.

Sioux Falls Halloween Delight: Join The Festivities At These Trunk Or Treat Events

Sioux Falls has what they call a humid continental climate. That means we tend to have warm, humid summers and cold, dry winters. For that, we get all four seasons and beautiful thunderstorms. Oh yea, and snow, boo.

Sioux Falls is also no stranger to weather extremes. We'll climb to 100 degrees and drop to 20 below zero, and everywhere in between.

That means our October, 31, Halloween weather has always been a bit wacky. Or has it?

When it comes to Halloween weather, Sioux Falls is historically lucky

Looking back at Sioux Falls climate data from the National Weather Service we see that southeast South Dakota usually has the perfect trick-or-treating weather on Halloween night.

Since 1894, when record-keeping began in Sioux Falls, we've enjoyed dry and chilly but not cold trick or treating for the most part. Especially in the last 20 years.

That's not to say we never get any weather on Halloween in Sioux Falls. There was the historic 'Halloween Blizzard of 1991," when Sioux Falls got eight inches of snow. Then in 1995, three inches fell. But, since then it's been pretty dry.

Sioux Falls Historical Halloween Weather

I've been herding kids around Sioux Falls for trick-or-treating since 2006. In that time I've had to bundle up against the cold and wear shorts because it was so warm.

But, the weather has never stopped us from begging for candy from the neighbors we haven't seen since the year before.
