‘Doomsday Clock’ Tickets Closer In On Humanity’s Impending End
The Doomsday Clock, which tracks the end of life on earth, now stands at 85 seconds to midnight, the closest to catastrophe in its nearly 80-year history.
This symbolic timepiece, maintained by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, measures how near humanity is to self-destruction through human-made threats.
Why the Clock Moved Forward
Scientists moved the clock 4 seconds closer to midnight this year, citing a "failure of leadership" globally.
According to Alexandra Bell, CEO of the Bulletin, "The risks we face from nuclear weapons, climate change and disruptive technologies are all growing. Every second counts and we are running out of time."
The assessment highlights increasing aggression among major powers including Russia, China, and the United States, alongside mounting concerns about nuclear proliferation, climate deterioration, biotechnology misuse, and artificial intelligence threats.
How the Time Is Determined
The Bulletin's Science and Security Board is comprised of experts in nuclear technology and climate science. They evaluate global events annually.
They assess nuclear arsenals, international conflicts, climate data, emerging technologies, and diplomatic relations to determine whether humanity has moved closer to or further from catastrophe.
Midnight represents Earth's total annihilation.
While the clock can move backward when humanity takes positive steps, this year's advancement reflects scientists' alarm that warnings have gone unheeded.
