Late Thursday afternoon reports surfaced on social media about a portion of I-29 buckling due to the heat. Google Maps with real time traffic seemed to confirm a slow down / stop near exit 73 - the Tea Exit. It appeared to be the southbound lane affected. (pictured)

What causes a road to buckle?

High temperatures can cause concrete to expand. When the pressure becomes to great the surface can "buckle" or force its way upward. Thermal expansion can also occur in extreme cold temperatures.

These incidents can cause damage to vehicles.

Unfortunately, this may not be the only incident as we head into an even hotter weekend. According to the National Weather Service, Sioux Falls Office, Excessive Heat Warnings are in place from Friday at 12:00PM to Sunday evening at 9:00 PM.
