Now we might have some additional insight into one of the factors that might be contributing to that low ranking.
Checking the Numbers
Hair expert Dr. Emrah Cinik looked at which U.S. states spend the most on hair, the research team analyzed the average cost of men’s haircuts and women’s salon visits in each state. The total cost was then compared with the average monthly household income to calculate the share of income spent on hair.
The results? South Dakotans spend the third least on haircuts ($22.50 on average), which is a significantly lower amount of spending on salon services relative to income.

- South Dakota $22.50
- Virginia $22.54
- North Dakota $24.01
- Rhode Island $25.20
- Nebraska $27.25
- Minnesota $28.17
- Colorado $28.26
- New Jersey $28.38
Who Spends the Most?
The findings reveal that Louisiana tops the list, with residents spending an average of $25.98 on haircuts and $46.85 on salon services, accounting for 1.50% of their income. Close behind are Kentucky (1.47%) and Arkansas (1.43%), while states like Virginia rank lowest, with residents spending just 0.90% of their income. Other notable high-spending states include Mississippi (1.42%), Massachusetts (1.40%), and West Virginia (1.40%).
Hawaii has the highest salon price at $80.00, while California residents pay an average of $69.00 per salon visit.
