Expect Delays On I-29 As Construction Kicks Off This Summer
Drivers on a stretch of Interstate 29 in South Dakota are about to encounter a new traffic headache.
Where and when is the work happening?
According to the Department of Transportation, starting Friday (June 27), a portion of the interstate, from White/Bruce (Exit 140) to Toronto (Exit 150), between Watertown and Brookings, will be down to one lane in each direction.
What is being done?
The lane reductions will allow crews to work on an asphalt concrete surfacing project in the southbound lanes. The project will also include milling and asphalt concrete resurfacing of on- and off-ramps, guardrail, pipe work, ramp detours, as well as acceleration and deceleration lane modifications.
How will traffic be impacted?
During the surfacing project, southbound traffic will be diverted to the northbound lanes to allow for a continuous two-way traffic configuration. This traffic configuration will remain in place until the project is complete.

Project timeline
The $9.8 million project is expected to be completed in mid-October.
